Is Chiado a good area to stay in Lisbon?

Chiado is one of the best bases for a first visit because it combines atmosphere with a genuinely central position. Historic cafés, theatres, bookshops and shops are nearby, while Baixa, Bairro Alto, Cais do Sodré and several major sights are reachable on foot. Baixa-Chiado metro station connects the blue and green lines, making the area practical when you need to travel farther across the city. Prices are usually higher than in residential districts, but the convenience can justify the difference on a short trip.

The main drawbacks are hills, crowds and occasional evening noise. Chiado is more polished and generally calmer than Bairro Alto, but rooms facing busy streets can still hear trams, traffic or people leaving restaurants.
