Best Cheap Lunches in Lisbon Under 15€

You can still eat lunch in Lisbon for under 15€. Find the best types of budget meals, neighbourhoods and local spots for bifanas, daily menus and more.

Eating in Lisbon for under 15€ per person is still possible, but you are more likely to find good value at lunch than at dinner. The best strategy is to look for a prato do dia, a neighbourhood tasca, a bifana counter or a simple grill rather than a restaurant designed around tourist traffic.

Prices change, so treat the figures below as a budget guide and check menus on arrival.

Look for prato do dia

The traditional daily special remains one of Lisbon’s best-value lunches. In neighbourhood cafés and tascas, a changing main course may cost around 8€–13€, sometimes with soup, drink or coffee included in a menu.

You are more likely to find these prices in Mouraria, Anjos, Arroios, Graça and residential streets away from the busiest sections of Baixa.

Lunch service often peaks between 12:30pm and 2:00pm. Popular daily dishes can sell out.

Bifana: the easiest cheap Lisbon lunch

A bifana is a pork sandwich seasoned with garlic and sauce, usually served quickly at a counter. It is one of the simplest ways to eat for well under 15€.

Pair a bifana with soup, fries or a drink and you can still keep the total low. The best versions are often found in old-school snack bars rather than restaurants with large tourist menus.

Zé dos Cornos

In Mouraria, Zé dos Cornos is known for straightforward Portuguese food and grilled dishes in an informal setting. It is the kind of place where lunch makes more sense than a long, polished dinner.

Arrive early and be flexible about what is available. Small traditional restaurants often work from a daily selection rather than a menu designed to keep every dish available all day.

O Trevo

For a quick central option, O Trevo is associated with the classic Lisbon bifana. This is not a long sit-down lunch: order at the counter, eat and continue your day.

It is useful when sightseeing around Chiado and Baixa because you do not need to travel to another neighbourhood simply to save a few euros.

Neighbourhood grills

Churrasqueiras are another reliable budget category. Grilled chicken, pork, fish and simple sides can offer better value than fashionable brunch restaurants.

Look around Arroios, Penha de França, Campo de Ourique and other residential areas where restaurants depend on regular local customers.

Markets and food halls

Not every market is cheap. Time Out Market is convenient and offers variety, but it should not be your benchmark for Lisbon’s lowest food prices.

Traditional municipal markets and surrounding cafés are generally better for budget eating.

How to avoid spending 20€ on a “cheap” lunch

Check whether bread, olives and starters placed on the table are charged separately. In Portugal, couvert items are not automatically free; you can decline them if you do not want them.

Also look at drink prices. A 10€ main course can quickly become a 17€ lunch once you add bottled water, starters and dessert.

Best areas for cheap food

Mouraria, Arroios, Anjos and parts of Graça remain useful places to look for traditional value. Baixa has cheap options too, but you need to be more selective around Rua Augusta and the busiest squares.

Lisbon is no longer the ultra-cheap European capital described in old guidebooks. But a 15€ lunch is realistic if you eat where residents eat, choose the daily special and save the more expensive destination restaurants for one or two meals rather than every day. Weekday lunch is usually the sweet spot: the same kitchen may cost noticeably more at dinner. It is also when traditional daily specials are most widely available.
