Cultura no Chiado 2026: Free Events in Lisbon, 12–18 October
Explore Cultura no Chiado in Lisbon from 12 to 18 October 2026. Find free museum entry, guided visits, workshops, dates, languages and how to book.

Chiado is opening up some of its less familiar doors this week. From 12 to 18 October 2026, Cultura no Chiado brings guided visits, literary events, a filigree workshop and free museum activities to central Lisbon. The programme is organised by the Centro Nacional de Cultura, and several smaller visits need advance registration.
Some events are already sold out. If you are in Lisbon this week, start with the options below, then check the organiser's live programme before setting out.
What can you do during Cultura no Chiado?
Visit the GNR Museum for free, 12–17 October
The Museu da GNR, inside the historic Carmo Barracks, has free entry from Monday 12 to Saturday 17 October. It is open from 10am to 6pm, with last entry at 5:30pm. This is the simplest option if you want a flexible visit without committing to a guided-tour time.
Join a free Carmo Archaeological Museum tour, 13–16 October
The Museu Arqueológico do Carmo is offering short guided visits to its collections and the ruins of Santa Maria do Carmo. Each visit starts at 11am and lasts about 30 to 45 minutes. The language changes each day: Portuguese on 13 October, Italian on 14 October, French on 15 October and Spanish on 16 October. No English-language session is listed. The tours are free, but each is limited to 15 people. Book through servicoeducativo@arqueologos.pt.
Explore a historic pharmacy and Bordalo Pinheiro's Chiado, 14 October
At 10:30am on Wednesday 14 October, a guided visit to Farmácia Barreto at Rua do Loreto 24 explores a pharmacy that has operated since 1876 and its in-house laboratory museum. At 3pm, João Alpuim Botelho of the Museu Bordalo Pinheiro leads a walk about the artist's links to Chiado, meeting at the Largo do Chiado kiosk. Both are small-group activities. Request a place from the Centro Nacional de Cultura at crgomes@cnc.pt or +351 213 466 722.
Hear a tribute to poet Nuno Júdice, 14 October
Wednesday also brings two literary events. A poetry reading starts at 5pm at Livraria Bertrand, Rua Garrett 73, followed by a tribute at 6:30pm at the CNC's Galeria Fernando Pessoa, Largo do Picadeiro 10. Entry is free, subject to room capacity. If you are visiting Bertrand as part of a walk around Chiado, this is an easy event to add to your afternoon.
See Portuguese filigree being made, 15 October
Joalharia do Carmo at Rua do Carmo 87B hosts Da Oficina à Joalharia on Thursday 15 October. The 45-minute workshop introduces the people and techniques behind Portuguese filigree. Sessions begin at 10:30am, 11:15am, noon, 12:45pm, 3pm, 3:45pm and 4:30pm. Each has space for only three participants, so registration is essential: email geral@joalhariadocarmo.pt and confirm availability and any conditions before going.
Discover Cais do Sodré station, 18 October
The final day includes an 11am visit on Sunday 18 October to Cais do Sodré railway station, focusing on its architecture and the modernisation of the Cascais Line. Meet in the passenger-building entrance hall, accessed from Praça do Cais do Sodré. Register through the Centro Nacional de Cultura at crgomes@cnc.pt or +351 213 466 722.
How to plan your visit
For a low-planning day, pair the free GNR Museum admission with a self-guided Chiado walk. If you want a guided visit or the jewellery workshop, contact the organiser or venue first. The official programme already marks several other visits as sold out, including Grémio Literário, Bairro Alto Hotel and Rossio station, so do not count on walk-in places for those events.
When: 12–18 October 2026. Where: venues in and around Chiado, Lisbon. Programme and updates: Cultura no Chiado 2026 official schedule. For more ideas that cost nothing, see our guide to free things to do in Lisbon.
