Fado Festival Lisbon 2026: Dates, Venues and Tickets

Caixa Alfama returns on September 11 and 12, 2026. Find dates, venues, artists, ticket prices and practical tips for Lisbon’s main fado festival.

Caixa Alfama 2026

If you are visiting Lisbon in September and want to experience fado beyond a traditional restaurant or concert hall, Caixa Alfama is one of the best events to know about. Lisbon’s main fado festival returns to the historic Alfama neighbourhood on September 11 and 12, 2026, with concerts spread across several venues within walking distance of each other.

Rather than taking place on a single festival site, Caixa Alfama turns the neighbourhood itself into the venue. A single wristband gives access to the different participating stages, subject to capacity.

When is the Lisbon Fado Festival in 2026?

Caixa Alfama 2026 takes place on Friday, September 11 and Saturday, September 12.

Ticket listings currently indicate a 5:00 pm start on both days, although individual performances have their own schedules across the different venues.

The festival is particularly convenient for visitors staying in central Lisbon, as almost everything happens around Alfama rather than at an arena outside the city.

Where does Caixa Alfama take place?

The festival uses 10 stages and spaces across Alfama, so expect to walk between performances rather than remain in one venue throughout the evening.

Confirmed locations for 2026 include:

  • Palco Caixa, at the Lisbon Cruise Terminal

  • Palco Ermelinda de Freitas, on the terminal rooftop

  • Museu do Fado

  • Auditório do Museu do Fado

  • S. Boa União

  • Igreja de São Miguel

  • Igreja de Santo Estêvão

  • Centro Cultural Dr. Magalhães Lima

  • Memmo Alfama

  • Fado à Janela

The Lisbon Cruise Terminal hosts the main stage and is easy to reach from the lower part of Alfama. Other concerts take place deeper inside the neighbourhood, including churches and smaller cultural spaces.

That variety is a major part of the appeal: a performance in a large waterfront venue feels very different from hearing fado inside one of Alfama’s historic churches.

Caixa Alfama 2026 lineup

The 2026 programme brings together established fadistas and performers from a younger generation.

Artists announced include Carminho, Raquel Tavares, António Pinto Basto, Aldina Duarte, Filipa Cardoso, Gonçalo Salgueiro, Helder Moutinho, Ricardo Ribeiro and Katia Guerreiro, among others.

This year’s festival also includes a special tribute to Portuguese fado singer Rodrigo, with Em Casa d’Amália ao Vivo, presented by José Gonçalez.

More than 60 artists are expected to appear across the festival, making it possible to see several different styles of fado over the two days rather than choosing a single performance.

How much are Caixa Alfama 2026 tickets?

At the time of writing, official ticket listings show:

One-day ticket: 26€
Two-day pass: 37€

Tickets are available for either September 11 or September 12, while the two-day pass covers the entire festival.

For most visitors specifically travelling to Lisbon for the festival, the two-day pass offers better value. A one-day ticket makes more sense if Caixa Alfama is simply one part of a longer Lisbon itinerary.

Prices and availability can change as the festival approaches, so check the authorised ticket seller before booking.

How does entry work?

Buying a ticket is not quite the final step.

All tickets must be exchanged for an official festival wristband, which is then used to enter the different venues. Wristband exchange is scheduled to be available at the festival ticket office from September 10.

The wristband gives you access to the participating stages, but entry to each concert is subject to the venue’s capacity.

This matters particularly at smaller spaces. If there is one artist you definitely want to see, arrive at that venue early rather than assuming your festival pass guarantees a seat.

Is Caixa Alfama worth attending?

For travellers interested in Portuguese music, yes - particularly because Caixa Alfama offers something different from booking a single fado show.

You can move between several performers and venues while exploring the streets where fado has deep historical roots. It is also a useful option if you are curious about the genre but do not know which singer or style to choose.

If you prefer a quieter evening with dinner and one intimate performance, a traditional fado show in Lisbon may still be a better fit.

But if you will be in Lisbon on September 11 or 12, 2026, Caixa Alfama is one of the most interesting opportunities of the year to experience several sides of fado in a single evening.
