How early should you arrive at Lisbon Airport?

Flying from Lisbon Airport? Find out how early to arrive for Schengen, international and US flights, plus security and passport control tips.

For most flights, you should arrive at Lisbon Airport 2 to 3 hours before departure. The exact timing depends on whether you’re flying within the Schengen Area, elsewhere in Europe or on a long-haul international flight.

Lisbon Airport can become busy, particularly during summer, early mornings and major holiday periods. Security and passport-control queues can also vary considerably, so arriving too close to departure is rarely worth the risk.

How early should you arrive for a Schengen flight?

For flights within the Schengen Area, Lisbon Airport recommends arriving at the check-in desk around 90 minutes before departure.

In practice, we recommend allowing around 2 hours before your flight, especially if you need to check luggage.

If you’ve already checked in online, only have hand luggage and know the airport well, you may get through more quickly. However, security queues can still be unpredictable.

Countries in the Schengen Area include Spain, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and many other European destinations.

How early for a non-Schengen or international flight?

For non-Schengen flights within Europe, the airport recommends being at check-in around 2 hours before departure.

For intercontinental flights, the official recommendation increases to 3 hours.

We would follow that three-hour rule for flights to destinations such as the United States, Canada or Brazil.

Non-Schengen passengers must normally pass through both security and passport control, which adds another stage where queues can form. Lisbon Airport currently warns passengers that longer waiting times may occur at departure border control.

How early should you arrive for a US flight?

For a flight from Lisbon to the United States, aim to arrive 3 hours before departure.

You’ll need enough time for check-in or bag drop, security, passport control and potentially additional airline document checks.

If you’re travelling during the summer or another particularly busy period, giving yourself some extra buffer is sensible.

Does Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 make a difference?

Yes, particularly because you need to make sure you go to the correct terminal.

Terminal 1 handles most airlines and both Schengen and international flights.

Terminal 2 is used by selected airlines and is primarily associated with low-cost departures. It is a departures-only terminal, and passengers should check their airline before travelling.

If you’re unsure, read our guide to Lisbon Airport Terminal 1 vs Terminal 2.

Are security queues long at Lisbon Airport?

They can be.

Waiting times depend heavily on the day, time of year and number of departing flights. Early mornings and peak summer travel periods can be particularly busy.

For non-Schengen passengers, passport control is another potential bottleneck.

This is why we wouldn’t plan your journey based on the shortest possible airport experience. Getting through security quickly is a bonus, not something you should rely on.

How long does it take to reach Lisbon Airport?

Lisbon Airport is unusually close to the city centre.

The metro connects the airport with the rest of Lisbon, while Uber, Bolt and taxis are also widely available.

If you’re choosing between options, see our guides to Lisbon Airport metro and Uber vs metro from Lisbon Airport.

Remember that your 2- or 3-hour buffer refers to the time you arrive at the airport, not when you leave your hotel.

FAQ

Is 2 hours enough at Lisbon Airport?

Usually for a Schengen flight, yes. For non-Schengen and especially long-haul flights, allow more time.

Is 3 hours too early for Lisbon Airport?

No. Three hours is the official recommendation for intercontinental departures and provides useful extra time if security or passport control is busy.

How early should I arrive with checked luggage?

Allow at least the standard recommended time and check your airline’s bag-drop deadline, as this can vary between carriers.

Is Lisbon Airport busy in the morning?

It can be, particularly during peak travel periods. Leave additional time rather than assuming security will be quick.
