Lisbon in November: Weather, What to Pack & Things to Do

Lisbon in november

November is a good time to visit Lisbon if you like walking, food and museums more than beach days. The city is cooler than in October, and rain is more likely, but you can still spend plenty of time outside. The trick is to keep your plans flexible.

This guide covers the weather, what to pack, what to do and the events confirmed for November 2026.

Lisbon weather in November

Expect mild afternoons, cool evenings and a real chance of rain. In the IPMA climate averages for central Lisbon, 1991–2020, November's average high is 18.1°C (65°F) and its average low is 11.8°C (53°F). The average temperature across the day is 15°C (59°F).

Night-time low

Monthly rainfall

These are long-term averages, not a forecast for your trip. A November stay can include bright walking days and heavy showers. Ten rainy days across a month does not mean it rains all day on those dates. Check the IPMA forecast shortly before you travel and again each morning.

Lisbon's stone pavements can be slippery when wet, especially on steep streets. Give yourself more time on a rainy day and save viewpoints for a clear spell. Daylight is also shorter than in summer, so plan your longest outdoor walk for the morning or early afternoon.

Is November a good time to visit Lisbon?

Yes, if you are happy to plan around the weather. Temperatures are comfortable for exploring neighbourhoods on foot, and a rainy afternoon is easy to fill with a museum, a long lunch or a fado show.

November is less suited to a trip built around sunbathing or eating every meal outdoors. It is also worth checking your dates before booking: Web Summit runs from 9 to 12 November 2026, bringing a large event to the city. Accommodation can be harder to find around major events, so compare your options early if your stay falls on those dates.

What to pack for Lisbon in November

You do not need a heavy winter wardrobe. Pack layers that work for a mild afternoon and a cooler evening:

  • A light jumper or fleece.

  • A waterproof jacket that you can carry during the day.

  • Comfortable shoes with grip for wet pavements and hills.

  • Long trousers, plus lighter clothes for sunnier days.

  • A small umbrella, sunglasses and sunscreen.

If you plan a day trip to the coast or a long sunset walk by the river, bring an extra layer. Wind can make it feel cooler than the thermometer suggests. A quick-drying pair of shoes is more useful than packing several bulky coats.

What to do in Lisbon in November

Walk through Alfama and Graça when the sky is clear

Use a dry morning for the streets and viewpoints that make Lisbon special. Start in Alfama, take your time around the cathedral and climb towards Graça. You can follow our guides to Alfama, Graça and Lisbon's viewpoints to choose your stops.

You do not have to commit to a full-day walk. If clouds roll in, head downhill for coffee or change to an indoor visit. This works better in November than a rigid itinerary with every hour booked.

Make a flexible day of Belém

Belém works well in changeable weather because you can mix a riverside walk with indoor stops. Visit the area around the Jerónimos Monastery when it is dry, then consider a museum if rain arrives. Our Belém guide helps you put the stops in a sensible order.

Check opening days and any booking requirements before setting off. A rainy day can also make popular indoor sights busier, so it helps to have a second option nearby.

Keep one rainy-day plan ready

Do not spend a wet afternoon waiting in your hotel for the sky to clear. Pick one or two places you would enjoy anyway: a museum, the Oceanário or a historic café. Our guides to Lisbon on a rainy day and the best museums in Lisbon offer more choices.

If the rain is brief, make a long lunch your indoor stop and return to sightseeing afterwards. November plans work best when you can swap the order of activities.

Try Portuguese food at a slower pace

Cooler days are a good excuse to sit down for a proper lunch instead of eating between attractions. Try a traditional tasca, order something you have not had before and leave room for a pastel de nata. Start with our Lisbon food guide, tasca shortlist or pastéis de nata guide.

See a fado show after dark

With shorter days, an evening show fits naturally into the itinerary. Choose the format you want: a concert focused on the music, or dinner with fado. Our fado show guide explains the options. Book ahead if there is a particular venue you want to visit.

Take a day trip, but watch the forecast

Sintra and Cascais are possible in November, but the weather may be different from central Lisbon. If you have several days in the city, keep the day trip flexible and choose your clearest day. Our day trips by train guide makes it easier to compare options without hiring a car.

Events in Lisbon in November 2026

These dates were listed by Visit Lisboa when this guide was prepared. Check the organiser's page before booking, as programmes can change.

Christmas markets sometimes begin before December, but do not plan around last year's opening dates. Check our Lisbon Christmas markets guide once the 2026 dates are confirmed.

A simple two-day November plan

Day 1: Explore Baixa and Chiado, then walk through Alfama and Graça while the weather is good. Spend the evening at a fado show. Our two-day Lisbon itinerary gives you a fuller route.

Day 2: Go to Belém for the riverside and its main sights. Leave room for a museum or a long lunch if it rains. If both days look wet, switch to the rainy-day guide and save the outdoor route for the best few hours.

Lisbon in November: quick answers

Does it rain a lot in Lisbon in November?

November is one of Lisbon's wetter months. The IPMA 1991–2020 average is about ten days with at least 1 mm of rain during the month. That is a reason to pack a waterproof layer, not a reason to expect every day to be wet.

Is Lisbon cold in November?

Usually not during the day by northern European standards. The average high is around 18°C (65°F), but evenings are cooler and wind or rain can make it feel colder. Layers are the easiest answer.

Can you go to the beach in November?

You can walk along the coast, but November is not a reliable beach holiday month. If a sunny day arrives, Cascais is an easy coastal outing; pack for a walk rather than assuming you will want to swim.

Are Christmas markets open in November?

Some may open late in the month, but dates change each year. Check the current programme before building a trip around a particular market.
