São Jorge Castle Lisbon: tickets, opening hours & tips

Planning to visit São Jorge Castle in Lisbon? Find tickets, opening hours, views, how to get there, and useful tips before you go.

São Jorge Castle is one of the best-known attractions in Lisbon, and it is easy to see why. It sits high above the city, with wide views over Alfama, Baixa and the Tagus, and the site includes walls, towers, gardens and several areas to explore. The official castle site also says the standard ticket includes full access to the monument and its gardens.

In this article, you will find whether São Jorge Castle is worth visiting, how much tickets cost, the current opening hours, what is included, how to get there, and a few useful tips before you go.

Is São Jorge Castle worth visiting?

Yes. For most first-time visitors, it is one of the easiest paid attractions in Lisbon to recommend. The views are excellent, the site is large enough to explore properly, and the visit feels more complete than a quick stop at a viewpoint. The castle also includes gardens and guided experiences in the standard ticket, which adds more value to the visit.

It also works especially well if you are already spending time in the old part of the city. You can combine it naturally with Miradouro das Portas do Sol, Feira da Ladra, and our wider guide to what to visit in Lisbon.

What is São Jorge Castle?

São Jorge Castle is Lisbon’s hilltop castle in the old city, above Alfama. Today it is one of the city’s main historic monuments and visitor attractions, with access to the castle grounds, walls, towers, gardens, museum spaces and guided visits included in the standard ticket.

For visitors, a big part of the appeal is not just the history. From here, you also get a much better sense of Lisbon’s layout, with the old neighbourhoods below and the river beyond.

Opening hours

According to the official schedule page, São Jorge Castle is open 7 days a week, closing only on January 1, May 1, December 24, December 25 and December 31. From March 1 to October 31, it is open from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, with last admission at 8:30 pm. From November 1 to February 28 or 29, it is open from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, with last admission at 5:30 pm.

The same page also notes that access to the wall-walks and towers may close earlier in the evening for safety reasons, especially in summer depending on daylight.

What is included in the ticket?

The standard ticket includes full access to the national monument and its gardens, with no time limit during opening hours. It also includes the guided tour Discovering the Castle, guided visits to the Camera Obscura / Periscope, and access to the archaeological site through the general guided tour. The castle museum is also open to visitors.

That makes the visit more complete than many people expect. You are not only paying for a view. There is enough here to spend real time exploring the site.

What to see at São Jorge Castle

The main highlights are the walls and towers, the views over Lisbon, the gardens, the museum, and the Camera Obscura. The official site also points to the archaeological remains inside the castle walls, with evidence from different periods of Lisbon’s history.

For many visitors, the views are still the main reason to go. If viewpoints are high on your Lisbon list, this article also links well with our guides to the best viewpoints in Lisbon and Miradouro da Senhora do Monte.

How long do you need?

For most visitors, 1.5 to 2 hours is a good amount of time. That is not an official duration, but it is a practical estimate based on the size of the grounds, the included guided elements, and the different parts of the site you can visit.

You can do it faster, but the visit works better when you have enough time to walk around without rushing.

Best time to visit

Morning is usually the best time if you want a calmer visit and softer light. Late afternoon can also be a good time for the views, but it is worth paying attention to last admission and the earlier closure of walls and towers.

If the weather is clear, the visit is much more rewarding. This is one of those places where the view matters a lot.

How to get to São Jorge Castle

The castle entrance is on Rua de Santa Cruz do Castelo. The official access page lists several practical routes: bus 737 plus a short 2-minute walk, tram 28E plus about 5 minutes on foot, and walking routes from Rossio, Martim Moniz, Baixa-Chiado and Rossio train station.

If you want the easiest public transport option, bus 737 is the most direct. If you are already exploring the old city, tram 28E and a short walk also work well. There are also nearby parking options at Portas do Sol and Chão do Loureiro.

Tips before you go

Buy your ticket online if you already know you want to visit. It makes the whole process easier and avoids buying at the entrance.

Do not leave the visit too late, especially in winter. Last admission times matter, and some access areas can close earlier in the evening.

Wear comfortable shoes. Even if you do not walk all the way up, the castle itself involves steps, uneven surfaces and a fair amount of walking.

What to see nearby

São Jorge Castle fits naturally into a wider walk through the old city. From here, you can continue to Miradouro das Portas do Sol, Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, or down into Alfama. If you are visiting on a Tuesday or Saturday, Feira da Ladra is also an easy addition to the route.

Final thoughts

São Jorge Castle is one of the few big Lisbon attractions that usually feels worth the time and the ticket price. The views are excellent, the site is large enough to explore properly, and there is more included in the visit than just the main grounds.

If you want one historic attraction in Lisbon that combines views, walking and a strong setting above the city, this is one of the best choices.
