Having mobile data from the moment you arrive in Lisbon makes the first hours of your trip much easier.

Holafly is the option we would choose for a typical Lisbon holiday if we wanted unlimited data without thinking about how much we were using.

You can buy the Portugal eSIM online, install it digitally and use the same plan throughout Lisbon and elsewhere in Portugal.

That multi-network setup is useful when your Lisbon trip includes places outside the city.

For a normal Lisbon city break, the main advantage is straightforward: you do not need to visit a phone shop, select a fixed data allowance or monitor your remaining GB.

2. Airalo: a good alternative for Lisbon

Airalo is the closest international alternative to Holafly.

Its Portugal eSIM currently lists NOS as the primary network, with access to two additional networks.

Airalo prices are charged in US dollars, so the euro amount can vary slightly with the exchange rate.

It is currently slightly cheaper than Holafly on comparable unlimited plans.

There is one important detail, however: Airalo's unlimited plans are subject to a fair-use policy. The current allowance is 3 GB of high-speed data per day, after which speed is reduced until the daily allowance resets.

For Maps, WhatsApp and normal browsing that is unlikely to be a problem.

If you expect very heavy mobile usage, Holafly may be the simpler option.

3. Vodafone Portugal: best local eSIM for Lisbon

Vodafone is our preferred local option if you want to use a Portuguese mobile operator.

Its tourist eSIM can be purchased online and received by email, so you can still organise it before travelling.

Vodafone's website currently displays a promotional price of 10€, but its published terms state that the promotion ran until 31 August 2026, so we use the standard 15€ price for comparison.

The plan is for use only in Portugal and does not include calls or SMS.

Vodafone also sells Portugal + Europe eSIMs:

Vodafone confirms that its travel eSIMs support hotspot sharing.

For a seven-day Lisbon trip, Vodafone is attractive if you know 10 GB is enough.

If your trip includes Lisbon plus several other European destinations, its Portugal + Europe options are also worth checking.

MEO has some of the cheapest unlimited-data tourist eSIM prices in Portugal.

MEO is particularly competitive on price, but for a first Lisbon trip we would still compare Holafly, Airalo and Vodafone first.

For most visitors, the decision can be simplified to four scenarios.

Choose Holafly if you want unlimited data and the easiest travel-focused option.

Choose Airalo if you want a slightly cheaper international eSIM and the daily high-speed allowance is enough.

Choose Vodafone if you prefer a Portuguese operator and 10 GB is sufficient.

Do you actually need unlimited data in Lisbon?

Not necessarily.

A tourist mainly using:

• Google Maps

• WhatsApp

• email

• restaurant searches

• Uber and Bolt

• transport apps

can usually manage a short trip without enormous amounts of data.

For many travellers, 5–10 GB is enough for a week in Lisbon.

Unlimited data becomes more useful if you regularly upload videos, stream content, make video calls, work remotely or simply do not want to check your remaining allowance.

This is why Vodafone's 10 GB plan can offer very good value for lighter users, while Holafly is easier for heavier users.

Why having mobile data in Lisbon is useful

Lisbon is relatively compact, but your phone is useful throughout the day.

Google Maps helps considerably because the city's hills and narrow historic streets mean the most obvious route is not always the easiest one.

Mobile data is also useful for:

• checking Metro and public transport information

• opening attraction tickets

• finding restaurants

• checking opening hours

• booking Uber or Bolt

• communicating with hotels or apartment hosts

• translating menus or signs

You can find public Wi-Fi in many hotels and cafés, but relying on it throughout your trip is inconvenient.

Should you install your eSIM before Lisbon Airport?

For Holafly and Airalo, we would complete as much of the setup as possible before travelling while you have reliable Wi-Fi.

Follow your provider's activation instructions carefully, as you do not want your plan validity to start earlier than necessary.

Vodafone works slightly differently: Vodafone says its plan validity starts once the eSIM is installed and activated and recommends installing it when you reach your destination and want to start using it.

Whichever option you choose, save the installation email or QR code somewhere accessible before flying.

Mobile data is particularly useful when you land at Lisbon Airport.

Is mobile coverage good in Lisbon?

Yes, generally.

Lisbon is well covered by Portugal's main mobile networks, including Vodafone, MEO and NOS.

For normal tourist use in areas such as Baixa, Chiado, Alfama, Belém, Príncipe Real, Avenida da Liberdade and Parque das Nações, mobile coverage should not be a major concern.

Reception can naturally be weaker inside some historic buildings, underground spaces or buildings with very thick walls.

Saving important tickets and your hotel address offline is still sensible.

Does an eSIM work on the Lisbon Metro?

Connectivity underground can vary depending on the station, line and provider.

Do not rely on having a perfect signal throughout every Metro journey.
