Arrive by approximately 21:30–22:00 if having a reasonably clear view is important. Arriving shortly before midnight may leave you outside the main area or behind taller buildings.

Praça do Comércio is best for visitors who want the full atmosphere and do not mind standing or waiting after the fireworks before leaving.

2. Ribeira das Naus: best riverside alternative

Ribeira das Naus extends west from Praça do Comércio towards Cais do Sodré. It keeps you beside the Tagus without placing you directly in the centre of the concert crowd.

The view depends on where the fireworks are launched and which parts of the riverfront remain accessible. From the eastern end, close to Praça do Comércio, the display should be relatively close. Farther towards Cais do Sodré, there may be more space, but the angle becomes less direct.

This is a practical option for travellers staying in Chiado, Bica, Bairro Alto or near Cais do Sodré. It also makes it easier to move away from the main square after midnight.

However, do not assume that the entire promenade will remain open. Security perimeters and pedestrian circulation plans can change each year. Check the official programme and access map before deciding on an exact position.

3. A Tagus River cruise: best unobstructed view

A New Year’s Eve cruise provides the most open perspective of the fireworks and Lisbon’s illuminated waterfront. Boats generally position themselves on the Tagus before midnight, with the city skyline behind the display.

This option avoids the dense crowd in Praça do Comércio, but experiences vary considerably. Large party boats focus on music and atmosphere, while small sailing boats and catamarans provide a quieter setting with fewer passengers.

Before booking, compare the departure pier, boat capacity, outdoor space and whether there is an enclosed area. Some cruises include an open bar, snacks and sparkling wine; others provide little more than the boat trip and midnight toast. Dinner should never be assumed unless it is explicitly listed.

The trade-off is that the fireworks appear smaller. Cacilhas is not the right option if your priority is being close to the sound, concert and countdown in Lisbon.

Transport is the other consideration. Cacilhas is reached by ferry from Cais do Sodré, and the special New Year’s Eve timetable can vary. Do not rely on previous years’ final departures. Check the Transtejo schedule once the 2026/2027 service is published and have a backup plan.

Cacilhas works particularly well if you are staying in Almada or want to have dinner there before midnight. Travelling over only for the fireworks requires more preparation.

5. Lisbon’s viewpoints: panoramic but less predictable

Lisbon’s miradouros are frequently recommended for New Year’s Eve, but their quality as fireworks viewpoints is inconsistent. Elevation alone does not guarantee an unobstructed view towards Praça do Comércio.

Miradouro da Senhora do Monte and the Graça viewpoints provide broad city panoramas, but the main display is distant and can be partially obscured by buildings. Miradouro de Santa Catarina is closer to the river, although its orientation is better for western Lisbon than for a direct view of Praça do Comércio.

Viewpoints can still be enjoyable if your priority is the Lisbon skyline, informal atmosphere and fireworks appearing across several parts of the city. They are less suitable if you specifically want a close view of the official display.

Arrive well before 22:30. The most accessible miradouros fill early, and space near walls and railings is limited. Bring warm clothing and avoid relying on taxis or ride-hailing services immediately after midnight.

A hotel overlooking the Tagus can provide a comfortable alternative to street celebrations. This is particularly appealing for families, couples and travellers who prefer to avoid standing outside for several hours.

However, “river view” is not enough. The room or terrace must face the correct section of the Tagus, with no building blocking the view towards Praça do Comércio. Some rooftops also close during winter or operate only as part of a private New Year’s Eve dinner.

• Whether the room or terrace faces the main fireworks;

• Whether access is guaranteed at midnight;

• If a New Year’s Eve package or dinner is compulsory;

• Whether the view is seated, standing or from inside;

Places that are not ideal for the main fireworks

Belém has an attractive waterfront but is several kilometres from Praça do Comércio. Unless a separate display is officially announced for Belém, it is too far away for a good view of the central fireworks.

Parque das Nações is another pleasant riverside district, but celebrations there vary from year to year. Choose it only if a specific local event or display has been confirmed.

Castelo de São Jorge may appear to be an obvious elevated option, but normal attraction access does not continue through midnight. Nearby streets also offer inconsistent sightlines and can become congested.

For a dependable experience, choose a confirmed event location rather than travelling to a distant neighbourhood based solely on elevation.

Metro stations, ferry terminals and roads may operate under special restrictions. The Terreiro do Paço station has closed early in previous years, but this should not be treated as confirmation for 2026/2027. Consult the official Metro, Carris and Transtejo announcements before travelling.

Ride-hailing prices and waiting times can rise sharply after midnight. If your accommodation is outside central Lisbon, choose your viewing location partly according to how you will return, not only according to the view.
