New Year’s Eve dinner in Lisbon
Many restaurants replace their normal menu with a fixed New Year’s Eve menu. Prices are usually higher than on an ordinary evening and a deposit may be required.
Baixa and Chiado are the most practical areas if you want to eat before walking to Praça do Comércio. Chiado has a broader choice of polished dining rooms, while Baixa keeps you closest to the main countdown.

Alfama provides a more traditional setting and works well for a dinner followed by a walk towards the river. Its steep, narrow streets can become crowded, so allow more time than the map suggests.
When reserving, check the full menu, drinks, service time and whether the table remains available until midnight. Some restaurants finish dinner earlier so guests can leave for the public fireworks.
Fado before the fireworks
A Fado performance is a good option if you want something cultural before joining the outdoor countdown.

It is a performance rather than a full New Year’s Eve dinner, making it easier to combine with a restaurant reservation or the midnight fireworks. Check the available time slots for 31 December before arranging the rest of the evening.
Traditional Fado restaurants in Alfama and Mouraria may offer longer dinner programmes, but these should be booked directly because New Year menus and finishing times differ from their usual service.
Rooftops, hotels and private parties
Lisbon hotels commonly organise gala dinners, rooftop parties and overnight packages. These events are not automatically included in a standard room reservation.
A hotel may advertise a rooftop or river view while selling access to its New Year’s Eve event separately. Likewise, a river-facing room does not guarantee a clear view of the official fireworks.

For most visitors planning to attend the public countdown, Baixa or Chiado will be the easiest base. Alfama works well if atmosphere matters more than having a flat route.
Parque das Nações is better for travellers who prefer a quieter riverside stay or need quick access to Oriente station and the airport.
Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré after midnight
Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré are the main nightlife areas for continuing after the fireworks.
Bairro Alto is dominated by small bars, while Cais do Sodré has larger late-night venues around Pink Street and the surrounding streets. Walking between Praça do Comércio and Cais do Sodré is straightforward, but queues and ticket controls should be expected at organised events.
Do not assume that every club will accept walk-ins. Check the event, entry deadline and dress code before leaving the waterfront.
Transport on New Year’s Eve
Lisbon’s metro, buses and suburban trains may follow special timetables on 31 December. The final 2026/27 arrangements should be checked on the official Metro Lisboa, Carris and CP websites.
Some metro entrances and streets around Baixa may close temporarily for crowd control. Uber, Bolt and taxis remain available, but higher prices and longer waiting times are common immediately after midnight.
This is why staying within walking distance of the chosen celebration can be more valuable than booking a better hotel farther away.
Portuguese New Year traditions
At midnight, many people eat 12 raisins, making one wish for each month of the coming year. The raisins are followed by a toast with sparkling wine and greetings of “Feliz Ano Novo”.
Small packets of raisins appear in Portuguese supermarkets during December and are easy to bring to Praça do Comércio or a river cruise.
What to do on New Year’s Day
New Year’s Day is quiet, and several attractions and independent restaurants operate reduced hours.
A late breakfast, a walk along the Tagus or an afternoon in Belém works better than a tightly scheduled sightseeing day. If you want to leave the city, Cascais is one of the simplest coastal options, although you should check the holiday train timetable.
