How to get from Lisbon to the Algarve

The Algarve is roughly 250–300 km south of Lisbon, depending on where you are going. Faro, Albufeira, Lagos and Portimão are accessible by train, coach, car, flight or private transfer.

For most travellers, the train or coach offers the best balance of price and convenience. A car makes more sense if you plan to explore several beaches or towns, while flying from Lisbon to Faro is rarely worthwhile unless it connects with another flight.

Lisbon to the Algarve: quick comparison

Times are indicative. Coach fares, flights, rental cars and transfers vary by date, while summer road traffic can add considerable time.

Lisbon to the Algarve by train

CP operates direct Intercidades and Alfa Pendular trains from Lisbon towards the Algarve. Trains leave Lisboa Oriente and also stop at stations including Entrecampos and Sete Rios before heading south.

The main long-distance Algarve stops are Tunes, Albufeira-Ferreiras, Loulé and Faro. Lagos, Portimão, Tavira and other regional destinations require an onward Regional train.

Intercidades or Alfa Pendular?

Intercidades is usually the better-value option. Alfa Pendular is slightly faster and costs a little more.

Both have reserved seating on the long-distance section, so the departure time and your connection in the Algarve often matter more than the type of train.

Train fares to Albufeira and Faro

From Lisboa Oriente, current standard Intercidades second-class fares are:

• Albufeira-Ferreiras: 23.45€

• Faro: 24.55€

Alfa Pendular Tourist-class fares are approximately:

• Albufeira-Ferreiras: 25.30€

• Faro: 26.30€

CP sometimes offers cheaper Promo tickets when booked in advance. Check the official CP fare information for current prices and conditions.

Where to buy train tickets

Tickets are available through CP's website or app, ticket offices and compatible station machines.

Book ahead for summer weekends, Friday evenings, Sunday returns and Portuguese public holidays. The cheapest promotional fares may have stricter change or refund conditions.

Train to Albufeira

Albufeira-Ferreiras station is around 6 km from Albufeira's old town and main beach areas.

You will normally need a local bus, taxi or ride-hailing vehicle for the final section, which makes the coach worth comparing if your accommodation is near central Albufeira.

Train to Faro

Faro is one of the easiest Algarve destinations to reach by train. The station is close to the marina, old town and bus terminal.

Faro Airport does not have a railway station, so airport passengers need a local bus, taxi or transfer.

Train to Lagos or Portimão

Change at Tunes for a Regional train towards Lagos. Portimão is on the same line.

Total travel time to Lagos is normally above 3h30, depending on the connection at Tunes.

Train to Tavira

Travel to Faro and continue east on a Regional train towards Olhão, Tavira, Monte Gordo or Vila Real de Santo António.

Lisbon to the Algarve by bus

Coaches are often the cheapest option and can be particularly useful for destinations where the railway station is outside the town centre.

FlixBus and Rede Expressos serve several Algarve destinations from Lisbon. Departures may use Oriente, Sete Rios or another stop, so always check the terminal on your ticket.

Bus to Albufeira

FlixBus advertises selected Lisbon–Albufeira fares from 4.98€, with the fastest journeys taking around 2h45.

The coach may be more convenient than the train because Albufeira railway station is in Ferreiras rather than the main resort area.

Bus to Faro

Selected FlixBus fares from Lisbon to Faro start at around 5.48€, with the fastest services taking roughly 3h15.

Bus to Lagos

A direct coach can be easier than the train because it avoids the change at Tunes.

Compare both FlixBus and Rede Expressos with CP, particularly if you are travelling to Lagos without a car.

Tickets and luggage

The lowest advertised fares are normally limited. Prices rise with demand, especially around summer weekends.

Check baggage rules before booking if you are travelling with a surfboard, bicycle or oversized suitcase.

Train or bus from Lisbon to the Algarve?

For Faro, the train is usually our preferred option: it is comfortable and arrives centrally.

For Albufeira, check the coach first if your hotel is near the centre, as the railway station is outside town.

For Lagos, a direct coach may be simpler than changing trains at Tunes.

If prices are similar, we would generally choose the train for comfort and the coach for the most convenient final stop.

Lisbon to the Algarve by car

Driving is the best option if you plan to explore several beaches, smaller towns, inland villages or different parts of the Algarve.

Typical driving times without heavy traffic are approximately:

• Lisbon to Albufeira: 2h30–2h45

• Lisbon to Faro: 2h45–3h

• Lisbon to Lagos: around 3h

Summer weekends and Sunday afternoon traffic towards Lisbon can add considerably more time.

A2 and A22 tolls

The A2 between Lisbon and the Algarve is tolled. Using the full motorway route to the Algarve costs roughly 22.50€ one way for a Class 1 vehicle, depending on your exact entry and exit points.

The 25 de Abril Bridge is charged northbound when returning to Lisbon.

The A22 across the Algarve has been toll-free since 1 January 2025.

Renting a car

If you need a car, compare the total rental price rather than the headline daily rate. Insurance, excess, deposits, fuel policies and toll-device fees can change the final cost significantly.

Another option is to travel south by train and rent the car in the Algarve. This can save a rental day or two and avoids the motorway journey from Lisbon.

When a car is worth it

A car is particularly useful for places such as:

• Benagil

• Carvoeiro

• Sagres

• Costa Vicentina

• inland Algarve

• trips involving several beaches in one day

If you are staying mainly in Faro, central Lagos or Tavira, you can easily spend part of the holiday without one.

Should you fly from Lisbon to Faro?

TAP operates flights between Lisbon and Faro, with around 45 minutes of scheduled flight time.

However, from central Lisbon, flying is rarely faster once you include the journey to the airport, security, boarding and getting from Faro Airport to your accommodation.

Flying makes most sense when you are already arriving at Lisbon Airport and can continue to Faro as part of the same airline itinerary.

Lisbon to the Algarve by private transfer

A private transfer is considerably more expensive than the train or coach but offers hotel-to-hotel transport without connections.

Current GetYourGuide listings include private transfers from Lisbon to Lagos, Portimão or Carvoeiro from roughly 290€–300€ per group of up to three people, although prices vary by date and availability.

This option makes most sense for families, small groups, travellers with several bags or anyone arriving at an awkward time. Some services include tolls and hotel pickup in the quoted price, but check the conditions before booking.

For three travellers, a transfer starting around 300€ works out at roughly 100€ per person, so it remains a premium option rather than a direct alternative to a 20€–30€ train ticket.

Algarve day tours from Lisbon

If you do not have time to stay overnight, there are organised tours from Lisbon that visit the Algarve in a single day.

These tours typically take around 11–12 hours, so expect a long day. They make sense if your Lisbon itinerary is fixed and the Algarve is somewhere you particularly want to see, but staying at least one night is much better if you have the time.

If you are already staying in Lagos, a shorter alternative is a Ponta da Piedade boat cruise, which explores the caves and rock formations around the coast.

Best option by Algarve destination

Albufeira

Compare the direct coach with the train to Albufeira-Ferreiras. The coach may leave you closer to your accommodation, while the train is generally more comfortable.

Faro

Take the direct train unless a coach fare or schedule is significantly better. Faro station is centrally located.

Lagos

A direct coach is often the simplest public-transport option. The train requires a change at Tunes.

A car is useful if you also plan to visit Sagres, Praia da Luz or beaches outside town.

Portimão and Carvoeiro

Portimão has a railway station and coach connections. Carvoeiro does not, so a car or transfer is more convenient for the final section.

Tavira

Take the train to Faro and continue east by Regional train, or check direct coach options. A car is not essential if you are staying mainly around Tavira itself.

Is the Algarve a day trip from Lisbon?

It is possible, but we would not normally recommend travelling independently to the Algarve and back in one day.

Even Albufeira involves around 5h30 of return travel on a fast itinerary. Lagos is further.

The Algarve works much better as an overnight trip or a stay of several days.

Are there still tolls on the A22?

No. A22 toll charges were removed on 1 January 2025. The A2 between Lisbon and the Algarve remains tolled.

Is it worth flying from Lisbon to Faro?

Usually not if you are starting in central Lisbon. Flying is more useful when Faro is part of a connecting air itinerary.
