Compare the best ways to get from Lisbon to Comporta, including the new direct bus, Setúbal ferry, driving routes, costs and practical travel advice.
Comporta is around 70–90 km south of Lisbon, depending on the route. The name is often used for a wider area that includes Comporta village, Praia da Comporta, Carvalhal and parts of the Tróia Peninsula, so your exact destination matters when choosing how to get there.
For most visitors, driving is still the easiest way to travel from Lisbon to Comporta. Having a car also makes it much easier to reach the beaches, restaurants and neighbouring villages once you arrive.
However, since September 2026, Rede Expressos has operated a direct coach from Lisbon to Comporta, making an overnight stay possible without a car.

Journey times can be longer in summer, particularly around the ferry and on weekend afternoons. Coach, ride-hailing and transfer prices also vary by date and demand.
Direct bus from Lisbon to Comporta
Older travel guides may say there is no direct bus between Lisbon and Comporta, but this changed on 1 September 2026.
Rede Expressos added Comporta, Carvalhal and Melides to its Lisbon–Sines service. The official announcement lists two services per day in each direction, with promotional fares from 2.95€ on journeys involving the new stops.
Lisbon to Comporta bus times
At launch, buses leave Lisbon Oriente at approximately:

From Comporta towards Lisbon, departures are around:

Where does the bus stop?
The Lisbon departure is from Gare do Oriente, which is served by the red Metro line and national trains.
In Comporta, the coach stops in the village. This is important because Comporta village and Praia da Comporta are not the same place.
If your hotel or beach is outside the village, you may still need a taxi, hotel transfer or bicycle for the final part of the journey.
Is the bus good for a Comporta day trip?
Not really, at least with the current timetable.
A 10:00 departure from Lisbon and a 15:00 return from Comporta leaves only around three hours in the area. You would have even less time at the beach after travelling between the village and coast.
The direct coach makes much more sense for an overnight stay or longer trip.
Lisbon to Comporta by car
Driving remains the easiest option for most travellers.
Comporta is spread across a large rural area rather than centred around one resort town. Praia da Comporta, Carvalhal, Pego, Tróia, hotels and restaurants can all be several kilometres apart.
There are two main routes from Lisbon.
Route 1: drive to Setúbal and take the Tróia ferry
Drive from Lisbon to Setúbal and take the Atlantic Ferries vehicle ferry from Doca do Comércio to Cais Sul on the Tróia Peninsula.
The crossing takes around 25 minutes. From the Tróia side, allow another 20–30 minutes to reach Comporta.
This is our preferred route if you have time and want to see Tróia on the way. The main drawback is the possibility of waiting for the ferry, particularly in summer.
Route 2: drive entirely by road
The alternative is to cross the Tagus and follow the A2 south before approaching Comporta through the Alcácer do Sal area.
Allow roughly 1h30–2h from central Lisbon under normal traffic conditions.
Although the distance is longer, this route can be faster when ferry queues are heavy. It is also easier if you need to arrive by a specific time.
Which route should you take?
Check live traffic and ferry departures before deciding.
If waiting times are short, travelling through Setúbal and Tróia makes the journey more interesting. During busy summer periods, driving via the A2 is often more predictable.
You can also take the ferry one way and return entirely by road.
Setúbal to Tróia ferry prices
Atlantic Ferries operates the vehicle ferry between Setúbal and Tróia.
A standard vehicle up to 3,500 kg currently costs 21€ one way, with the driver included.
Each additional passenger costs 5.50€, while children aged 0–5 travel free.
For example, two adults travelling in one normal car pay 26.50€ for a single crossing, before fuel and other road costs.
Can you book the Tróia ferry?
No. Normal vehicle-ferry crossings cannot be reserved in advance.
Tickets are bought at the terminal, and vehicles board according to available capacity. Via Verde can also be used for payment.
Allow extra time on summer weekends, Friday afternoons and Portuguese holidays.
The ferry timetable changes during the year, so check Atlantic Ferries before leaving Lisbon.
Passenger ferry from Setúbal to Tróia
If you are travelling without a car, there is also a passenger catamaran between central Setúbal and Tróia Marina.
The journey takes around 15 minutes and costs approximately 4.90€ one way per adult.
However, this does not solve the entire Lisbon–Comporta journey. After reaching Tróia Marina you still need a local bus, taxi or transfer to Comporta.
For most car-free travellers, the new direct Rede Expressos coach is now much easier.
Lisbon to Comporta by public transport via Setúbal
If the direct coach timetable does not work for you, it is possible to travel through Setúbal.
The journey normally involves:
Train or bus from Lisbon to Setúbal
Catamaran from Setúbal to Tróia Marina
Local bus or taxi from Tróia towards Comporta
Rodoviária do Alentejo route 8346 serves stops between Tróia and Grândola, including Comporta.
Check the current Tróia–Comporta timetable before travelling.
Allow at least three hours for the full journey once connections and waiting times are included.
It is possible, but we would only choose this route if neither driving nor the direct coach is an option.
Lisbon to Comporta by Uber or Bolt
Uber and Bolt sometimes offer trips all the way from Lisbon to Comporta.
Expect roughly 70€–110€+ each way, depending on demand, vehicle type, pickup point and route.
For three or four passengers, this can be reasonable when the fare is shared.
The problem is the return journey. There are far fewer drivers around Comporta than in Lisbon, particularly at night or outside the busiest areas.
Do not rely on finding an Uber or Bolt at short notice if you need to catch a flight or train.
Lisbon to Comporta by private transfer
A private transfer is the easiest door-to-door option if you do not want to rent a car.
GetYourGuide currently lists private transfers from Lisbon to Comporta from around 135€–140€ per vehicle for up to two people, although prices change according to the date and availability.

Pickup from your accommodation is particularly useful if you are staying at a hotel or rural property outside Comporta village.
For families and larger groups, check the vehicle capacity and total price before booking.
Renting a car for Comporta
If Comporta is only one part of your Portugal trip, renting a car can make more sense than paying for a return private transfer.

If you are staying in central Lisbon first, consider collecting the car only on the morning you leave for Comporta. Parking a rental car in Lisbon for several days is rarely useful.
Getting around Comporta
This is where having a car makes the biggest difference.
Comporta village is several kilometres from Praia da Comporta, while Carvalhal, Pego, Melides and Tróia are farther away.
Public transport between these places is limited.
Local taxis and private drivers are available, but booking ahead is sensible for restaurant reservations, hotel transfers and evening journeys.
Some hotels also provide bicycles or transfers to nearby beaches, so check what your accommodation includes before renting a car for the entire stay.
Parking at Comporta beaches
Praia da Comporta and Praia do Carvalhal have designated parking, but spaces can fill quickly in July and August.
Arriving earlier in the morning makes parking considerably easier.
Avoid parking on dunes, vegetation or restricted roads. If a beach car park is full, use another official parking area rather than blocking narrow access roads.

Is Comporta worth a day trip from Lisbon?
Yes, particularly if you have a car.
Leave Lisbon in the morning, visit Comporta village, spend several hours at Praia da Comporta or Praia do Carvalhal and have lunch before returning.
We would not try to visit Comporta, Tróia, Melides and several beaches in one day. The area looks compact on a map, but travelling between stops quickly takes up time.
Without a car, the current direct coach timetable is better suited to an overnight stay.

Morning
Leave Lisbon early.
Take the Setúbal ferry if you want to visit Tróia on the way, or drive through Alcácer do Sal if you prefer the more predictable route.
Stop in Comporta village before continuing to the beach.
Lunch and afternoon
Choose either Praia da Comporta or Praia do Carvalhal and spend most of the afternoon there.
Book lunch ahead in July and August, particularly if you want to eat at a beach restaurant.
Return to Lisbon
Check traffic and ferry queues before leaving.
You do not need to return by the same route you used in the morning.
Which option is best?
Drive if you are visiting Comporta for a day or want to explore several beaches.
Take the direct coach if you are staying overnight near Comporta village and do not need a car once you arrive.
Book a private transfer if you want door-to-door transport without renting a vehicle.
The train–catamaran–local bus route is still possible, but the new direct coach has made it largely unnecessary.
